Frijoles refritos, also known as refried red or black beans, are a traditional Mexican dish that is not only delicious, but also easy to prepare. One of the most used accompaniments in Mexican cuisine, prepared in different forms, this basic accompaniment will bring a lot of flavor to all your dishes. In this article, we will show you how to prepare your refried beans at home in a few simple steps. Whether you serve them as a side dish or as a main dish, these frijoles are sure to delight your taste buds!

Before you start preparing this recipe, you will first need to get your hands on some red beans. Don't panic, they are easily found in France, but in different forms.

So we have put together three recipes for you, to use depending on the beans you have on hand.

Refried Beans (Option 1)

Raw red beans (found in supermarkets) - the most traditional

Ingredients

  • 500 g raw red beans
  • half a red onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • Coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
  • Olive oil

Recipe

  1. Soak the beans in water.
    Soak for at least 12 hours before cooking.
  2. In a saucepan, cook the beans with the salt, garlic and onion for about 30 min or until cooked.
  3. Once cooked, put the mixture in a blender (or use a giraffe). Cover with the cooking juices (the same amount as the beans). Add the cumin, chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.

Refried Beans (Option 2)

Canned cooked red beans (Bonduelle style)

Ingredients

  • 1 can of red beans
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • half a red onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
  • Olive oil

Recipe

  1. Rinse the beans (they are often sweet)
  2. Place the beans in a blender (or use a mixer). Add a little water, or use natural chicken stock if you have it (same amount as the beans). Add the cumin, chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.
  3. Finely chop the onion and garlic
  4. On a hot plate, heat some oil and brown the onion and garlic, then add the bean puree, stop cooking once the puree starts to boil.

Refried Beans (Option 3)

Canned red beans (cidacos style)

Ingredients

  • 1 can of red beans
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • Chipotle pepper puree (optional)
  • Olive oil

Recipe

  1. Place the beans with the juice from the can in a blender (or use a hand blender). Add a little water or natural chicken stock if you have it. Add the cumin, chipotle pepper puree (optional) and blend.
  2. On a hot plate, heat some oil and add the bean puree, stop cooking once the puree starts to boil.

The bonus tip

don't hesitate to do as in the photo of this article, crumble a little fresh cheese (Mexican fresh cheese oaxaca / feta / Turkish cheese type gazy 60%) on top of your beans, you won't regret it 😋.


With these recipes, you can now easily make one of the flagship accompaniments of Mexican cuisine. Use without moderation to accompany your Mexican dishes based on tortilla, chicken, red meat, pork, etc.
